1st XI
The boys headed to Shark Park in a re-match
of their nail biting Rd 1 loss. Losing the toss Johnson Park had no hesitation
in going into bat. Early wickets as always were key to success and Zach
Flintoff claimed as early scalp with the score on 18. From there some good
batting saw several partnerships formed and at tea the ledger was fairly even
at 3/80 odd. The reigning premiers then showed why they are a quality side and
quickly had the scoreboard ticking over. The 4th wicket stand
yielded 102 runs before the breakthrough was made. Another partnership then saw
JP hit 4/250 and 300 + was on the cards, fortuitously our bowlers were able to
claim some wickets and roll the tail quite cheaply. In the end we managed to
bowl them out for 273 in 74 overs. The best of the bowlers were Trav Mulder
4/37 (15) Adam Wild 3/55 (16) and Shan Small 2/60 (22).
The opening partnerships has been a
highlight for the club this season however Shan and Butchy’s run has been halted
for the time being. Butch sustained a shoulder injury while fielding and was
ruled out for this match. The good news is Butch is ready to go this week. Shan
and Rhys got us off to a great start with Rhys playing a typically aggressive
innings before he was removed in the 10th over for 25. Unfortunately
that was a common trend with our top 3 all getting starts. Shannon was clean
bowled the ball after tea off a no ball but departed 2 balls later after some
handy glovework saw a leg side stumping which was then followed by one the
greatest celebrations I have ever seen by a keeper. Brett Morrison was adjudged
LBW on 26, Wayne McInerney was then ruled in front for 10 as was his brother in
the same mode of dismissal and then Dylan Wild was declared to be leg before
wicket to see the side drop to 7/99. Fortunately Josh Gregory and Zach Flintoff
steadied the ship until Zach fell LBW for 14, Trav fell soon after for 2 and
Wilba was the last man out with the score on 177 in the 54th over.
The highlight of the batting performance was Josh Gregory’s unbeaten 46. It
seems Santa brought some much needed runs to the young fella.
Some big challenges await in the final 3
rounds. We have the luxury of being at home for these games and a couple of
wins should see us in finals action for the first time ever in the top grade.

2nd XI
The 2’s looked to cement their place in the
4 against JP who were occupying 9th position on the ladder. Winning
the toss and bowling looked like a stroke of genius by Jezza Mac as the visitors
were reeling at 5/54. At tea some great
bowling and fielding saw the Sharks reduced to 7/80 odd. To their credit JP
came out and showed some really good fight and in the end were able to post a
credible 167 from 67 overs. Best of the bowlers were Sean Reid 3/24 Ash
Thompson 3/25 Daisy Adams continues to impress with 2/26 off 16 Hawksey and
Daine were able to chip in for a wicket each also.
KGCC had 10 overs to face late on day 1 and
with Ben McLean breaking his collarbone in the field the boys were effectively
1/0. Dovey Hay And Corne Mostert put their hands up to open the innings and the
tail was up for JP when they removed Corne for 0 and it was effectively 2/1.
Dovey and Reidy saw out the remaining overs and at the end of the days play the
score was on 40. Dovey (28) was out early on day 2 to some quality
glovesmanship and that brought Jez McKinnon to the crease. Jez and Reidy
continued the aggressive style of play with Reidy out for a well earned 27. The
game was clearly in our favour and when big Thommo strolled out he was looking
for a quick kill. And quick it was. Thommo blasted 10 fours and 2 maxi’s in a
whirwind innings of a better than a run a ball 62. All the while Jez was as
steady as a rock and continued to accumulate. With the score well and truly
passed Matt Young and Gerard Jongen both notched up 40’s and continued to bat
with Jez. In the end Jez was the last wicket to fall for a well made 89 that
included 12 boundaries. Back to back scores for the club coach and he has made
the selectors ears prick up.
It may also be pertinent at this stage to
congratulate Jez on his job as coach over the last 5 years. For those who don’t
know Jeremy has announced that he will stepping down as Senior coach at the end
of the season. He has seen the club go
through some major changes and his love for the club and his passion to make us
successful is something that will continue to be felt for a long time. Well
done mate.
3rd XI
Travelling to the postage stamp at JP 2 the
par score would have been 250. With some quality bats this looked achievable.
The top 3 did the early damage with Andrew Potts 38 and Jase Buljubasic 37
gettign us off to a great start. This brought Matt Lambrick to the crease and
he teed off. 4 sixers and 10 4’s saw him help himself to a quality 83. Anthony
Jongen was also instrumental before being run out for 44. The total in the end
reached 292 off 62 overs.
The game seemed in KGCC’s control at 7/158
but some big hitting saw a scare through the camp and with 1 bloke going nuts
it appeared we may have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Fortunately
we bowled them out for 258 and the points were secured. Well done lads. Im
sorry I don’t have bowling figures to share.
4th XI

Round 10 was going to be a tough game
against Lysterfield who were fighting to stay in touch with the top 4. Having looked through MyCricket, they seemed
to have a very good blend of youth and experience who were all making a
contribution this season. Our team took
on a different look to the last round as we welcomed back the juniors from the
rep carnivals as well as a couple of other handy inclusions in Greg
"Crookie Monster" Crook and Nathan "Monty" Montague.
The Lysterfield openers put up some
solid resistance with a 119 opening stand before Matty T ran out the junior
opener and Adam Wylde completed a neat stumping from Nixon's bowling to remove
the senior opener, both in the same over! Having closed out the opening 35
overs at 2/143, we went into bat knowing that 3 of our top order were not going
to be playing the following week. Monty,
in an unfamiliar role, opened the innings before feathering a catch behind for
a well made 26. Chris continued his good
form with 21 and Josh Curnow finished on 35 not out but had to be retired. Matty T provided great support at the other
end with 18no and our score at 3/124 (effectively 4/124) kept us in touch with
Lysterfield.
With the match evenly poised, we were
every chance of making a game of it in week 2, especially when Adam took a
wicket in the 1st over of the day.
Unfortunately, that was going to be the only bit of joy for quite a
while as the Lysterfield stroke makers took advantage of the relatively easy
conditions to amass a final score of 322 all out. Our bowling and fielding effort, while not
spectacular, was quite solid and the score did not do it justice. We fought
back from 3/257 to take 7/65. Liam Carlin made a welcome return as a substitute
keeper with 3 catches and a hand in a stumping. Scotty also was a monster in
the field with a catch, run out and numerous bruises from tumbles and body
behind the ball efforts. Two wickets apiece were taken by Scotty, Nixon, Adam,
Crookie Monster with a couple of run outs rounding out the innings.
Needing 199 from 35 overs with 6 wickets
in hand was going to be a difficult task so we shuffled the order a bit with
quick scoring seniors lining up to join Matty with the plan to push it along at
a steady rate and then see what we could do.
Despite most batsmen getting starts, we continued to lose wickets regularly
before we were finally dismissed for 219, 103 short and unfortunately leaving
12 overs on the table. Alex D-Nop (20)
batted well in a 27 run partnership with Matty who was finally dismissed for a
well made 33 runs, his highest score in any level of cricket, having batted
through 5 partnerships and a total of 121 runs.
Having settled into no 5 in the order, Matty's batting has benefitted
from spending time in the middle and getting the confidence to play some shots
to complement his strong defensive game.
While the 103 run defeat was our worst
result for the season, it didn't feel like we played that badly. Lysterfield were a very strong team with
plenty of stroke makers with their young no 3 Josh Bundy (68 runs) making a
reasonable ball look bad as he drove at everything with impressive timing and
power for a young kid. They also had a
good balance to their bowling attack which was backed up by a fine fielding
effort. From our perspective, there were
plenty of positives with Matty T and Josh making runs; Adam Wylde taking
wickets and showing some fine form behind the stumps; Liam Carlin returning and
showing some good form; Crookie Monster taking a break from the snapper fishing
to blow out some cobwebs, and; Scotty David starting to find his mojo with the
ball and absolutely killing it in the field.
