Mixed results on the weekend, with the ones and twos managing to salute, and the third’s and fourths (basic counting makes them the fourths) unable to come away with the chocolates.
Mother Nature clearly forgot she hated cricket on Saturday and gave us perfect weather, allowing the ones to continue building their score before being dismissed for 137 on the forest that is H.V Jones Reserve. Chopsy put together a very nice 28 and Scotty Mac had his breakout game for the ones, top scoring with a calm and calculated 33. With the runs on the board and only 45 overs to take 10 very expensive (dollar value, not run value) wickets, it looked like it would take some magic. With 7 overs remaining and the gators only needing 30 odd runs with 5 men still to bat, it looked like we might be able to hang on for a draw. Nice flight picked up a wicket for the Butch and the match seemed in the balance again. In walked Captain Switchfoot, who had other ideas, and after a hop, skip and a bowl, he picked up three wickets in 6 deliveries. 9 down and still chasing a few, Grass put in another intimidating over, leaving Wilba to stroll in and pick up the last, claiming a great victory and his 15th 5 wicket haul for the club. Final Scores KGCC 10/135 Def. Mtn Gate 10/115.
The two’s had the boys from Sth Belgrave in trouble early, after some nice bowling from Kid Kodi and the Matronomic captain. Nice fielding in the wettish conditions, especially by The Gump (Patty Forrest) and Shelly had the blue and yellow 8/80 when rain hit. Back on Saturday, Sean Reid kept up boring best, getting 3/14 of 16 miserly overs. Crystal by comparison was smashed around to claim 4/22 off 16.3. With 102 on the board to chase, the two’s seem a bit of trouble at 3/25 and only 9 players. The Reid and write, and the Read him his rights specialists (S.Reid & T.Mulder) then got together and managed to put on a swashbuckling 79 run partnership to get the falcons over the line. Travvy finished with a season high 57* and Reidy with a well compiled 23*. Final Scores KGCC 3 104 Def. Sth Belgrave 10/102.
The threes ventured out to Gilmour Park to take on Knoxfield, and after sending Knoxfield in to bat, rolled them on Saturday morning for 154. Hawkes eye was at his slingy best with 3/17 and Rhys Thomas mystified with his well flighted medium pacers and luscious locks to claim 5/57 off a marathon 21 overs. Blake was as consistent as always with 2/40. The guys got off to a poor start and were looking in real trouble at 6/20. D.Wylde managed to hit a maximum in his score of 7, which seems impressive, though besides Crazies 15, no one else managed to get to double figures. A bit more time in the nets for a few of the boys will see their batting get to the same strength of their bowling and plenty more wins on the board.
The fourth XI (or fifth, or reverse 1st) made the long trip down to the bottom oval, to complete a KGCC vs. Sth Belgrave styled day at the Fort. A good opening stand by Twigsy and the Z-train had the guys looking good for a big score. Unfortunately the scores fell away slightly from there, though Papa Slip and Daniel Richards managed to find the fence a few times each. End result, all out for 130. Bowling to defend, James Carter was outstanding with 3/10 off his 8 and some economical bowling from all 9 bowlers used. It did not quite hold up though, with the blue and yellows managing to win by 5 after using up all of their allocated overs.
Make sure everyone gets down to the track this week with plenty of energy leading into Saturday’s big event. Obviously I am referring to the swinging 60’s party on Saturday night at the Fort, so get on your dad’s or uncles best gear and make sure you warm up somehow during the day for plenty of dancing. Also, cricketers are the only people who listen when you brag about that day’s effort, so why go anywhere else on a Saturday night. Now run and tell that homeboy.
