4 Close losses in Round 1 Posted by Ben McLean on Monday, 5 Oct 2009 at 10:15am Season 09/10 kicked off with 4 close games that all went against us on the weekend. In the 1st XI's game Mark Dalton 58 & Wayne McInerney 23 opened the innings with a brilliant partnership of 72. Jeremy MacKinnon 20, Nav Singh 21 & Josh Gregory 20 all got starts but failed to get a big score. After looking like a huge total would be obtained at 3/126, a collapse in the middle order saw a strongly competitive total of 9/185 from the 40 overs. When we took to the field 3 early wickets put us in the box seat with St Johns 3/39, but a 114 run partnership eased the pressure and allowed St Johns to hit the required 9 runs from the last over. Adam Wild was the best bowler with 2/26 from his 8 overs. The boys can move onto the next game against Upper Gully knowing that they can be competitive in KTC. The 2nd's also suffered a last over defeat against St Johns. Skipper Adrian Zandt fell first ball of the innings, LBW, later declaring that he was probably the first wicket to fall in FTGDCA this season, with the game starting early at 12.29pm. Batting at #3, Corne Mostert batted the rest of the innings superbly scoring 65* in the process, ably supported by Simon Taylor with 37 and Adam Metherell 28. On the large oval at KGCC #1 a score of 7/151 seemed to be enough. Unfortunately a good opening partnership and a couple of solid middle order partnerships took the game from us. It was a great display of catching however, Matt Young too a great diving catch at mid-on, Troy Cetrola took one on the second grab behind him, and Mitch Gregory a one hander at full stretch over his head. Adrian Zandt took the pick of the bowling figures with 3/37(8) and Adi Kotamraju 1/16 (6) also impressed in his first 2's game. The 3's lead by Daine Vernon played at Upwey's super compact #2 oval. The guys bowled first and took 2 early wickets at 2/5. Nathan Montague took 3 middle order wickets for 28 from his 8 overs. The guys restricted Upwey to 8/166, despite Daine losing both his balls during the game. During their batting, 3 runouts were costly, Daine Vernon 33 and Scott McInerney 22 were the main contributers in the reply of all out for 119. Big Ash Thompson and Warren "Lord" Comerford will bolster the batting in this side with some hefty hitting ability. The 4's lost, after struggling with numbers early they managed to get 11 on the field. Mark Hancock impressed with 3/13 from his 8 overs including 3 maidens, gloveman Corey Cincotta snared a late wicket in his 1/30 from 8. 2 Top order runouts cost the 4's with John Mills 21 and Glenn George 30 both getting starts but a failure to communicate cost them David Hancock was the next best with 18. The 4's fell 24 runs short of the target. The much famed and hyped-up KGCC Dream Team competition will get going for Round 2, however the system is still up on the ramps at the moment getting a good grease and oil change.
